New year, same me?

Every year I think we all feel the pressure with the new year new Me saga, you're expected to better yourself, start fresh every year, right your wrongs and become a better person.
Some may join the gym, some may want to lose weight, some may read a book, some resolutions may be to go out less, and some may be to go out more. But the thing that gets to me the most is why do we have to do this? Are we just setting ourselves unattainable goals? why does society make us feel as though we are not okay as we are, and that we must change something?
Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing to want to better yourself, but why can’t we start now, why do we pin everything on this one day to decide we want to be better? The number of times, I hear “I’ll do that in the new year”, why not start now? and then if you haven’t accomplished what you wanted to the past year you feel as though you’ve failed, and then feel disappointed in yourself.
Rather what I do think people should be doing, if you want to wait for the new year, embrace it for positive change, this doesn’t have to be drastic such as I’m never going to eat chocolate again. Consider shifting the focus towards sustainable and realistic intentions that align with your values and aspirations. If you’re in my position, I can honestly say I don’t think there’s going to be much change for me in the new year, there’s nothing wrong with being happy with how you are now. Embrace how you feel, if you don’t want to work on anything, simply don’t.
